In Science, year 5 have been looking at the movements and distance of the planets from the Sun. We found out a year on Mercury is only 88 earth days because that is how long it takes for Mercury to orbit the Sun. If we lived on Mercury, we would have 4 times as many birthdays! On the other hand, Neptune takes 60,190 days to orbit the sun. That would mean only having a birthday once every 165 years! Sycamore class also tried to create a scaled down model of the solar system on the playground to get some idea of where planets are in relation to the Sun and each other.
For Design & Technology we have been designing and creating our own musical instruments. We listened to some orchestra music and looked at some instruments first for inspiration. We chose whether we would create a wind, string or percussion instrument. Using recycled materials where possible, we have made our own instrument and decorated it using Christmas as the theme. There was a fabulous amount of problem solving going on throughout the process and, as in real-life, not everything went to plan. Designs have been adapted, tweaked and sometimes scrapped completely and started again. We have worked hard on our own designs and also helped each other along the way. We are looking forward to seeing the finished products and hopefully playing them as part of a Year 5 orchestra jamming session. Some of them may need tuning first!
