We had an exciting start to the half term with Arts Week. Year 2’s artist inspiration was a Japanese artist called Hasegawa Tōhaku. We had great fun making prints in the style of his artwork and further inspired by the Japanese arts, we wrote haiku poems motivated by our nature walk though Birchanger Woods.
Our topic for this half term is The United Kingdom and we will be looking at the four countries and main cities which make up our island and the seas surrounding us. We will cover many aspects of the unique cultures that exist in the UK, through dance & music, design technology and art.
In English we will initially be using the story of Paddington Bear’s arrival in London as our hook into the topic, and look forward to discovering all about Paddington’s adventures around the UK.
In maths, we are focusing on estimating and measuring length, 3D shape and multiplication and division. The children enjoyed estimating how many children were the same height as some of the trees in our school.
Within our science lessons we are focusing on the parts of the human body and doing an investigation into how we change as we age; we will then see if we can use this knowledge to predict the outcome to a question.
In computing we are introducing the children to coding: how to create algorithms before debugging and testing their codes.
