It’s been a busy start to the term for Year 6. The children arrived back at school to find that time on The Isle of Yin Yang and The Isle of Two Sides has flown by and we are now thousands of years on. All of Year 6 are living on the islands in tribes, each in a different biome. Over the past couple of weeks they have been researching tribes in the real world that live in similar biomes, looking at their culture, food, housing and clothing, and drawing on their customs for their own tribes. Soon the children will start to develop trade links between tribes on the island. They have also looked at different creation stories and origins of cultures and started to think about the origins of their own tribes. This will lead to them developing their culture, looking at traditions and festivals that they would like to celebrate.
In addition to all this work, we have explored the picture book ‘The Island’ by Armin Greder, which is a wonderful story that had provoked lots of discussion about equality and treating others kindly and fairly. The children have begun to write persuasive letters to the Lord Ruler of the island using skills that will hopefully come in handy later in the topic! A visit from a magistrate, Elaine, helped them to further consider their rights and responsibilities and the children were highly engaged and asked lots of thought-provoking questions.
In other news, we’ve also started some SATs practice and the children have already impressed us all with their determined and positive attitudes.
