Year 4 have been reading lots of different Greek myths and have discovered some modern versions written in a unique style by Marcia Williams. We were so inspired by her creative approach to retelling these myths that we have created our own versions of ‘Pandora’s Box’ in the cartoon-style she uses.
To continue our mythological journey, we have investigated the mythical beast characters of these stories in more detail. This week we invented our own mythological creature and got to know our creatures better by interviewing each other in role as a ‘magizoologist’ (like Newt from ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’), explaining our new discovery. We also spent time creating sketches of these unusual creatures, brushing up on our sketching skills and further developing our use of different pencil techniques.
It’s All Gone to Pot!
Year 4 stepped back in time again and became sculptors from Ancient Greece! We used clay and water to create a miniature clay pot in the style of an Ancient Greek Krater. We had to divide the clay into different sized balls to make the different parts before adding attaching them together. The larger ball had to be pinched and turned to make the body of the pot and the other pieces we shaped into the base and handles, which we had to attach by scoring the sides and using water like glue to smooth the pieces on. They are currently being fired in a kiln to make them hard so that we can decorate them in the traditional style using Ancient Greek patterns.
Go for Gold!
As part of our topic work, we are busy practising our play. The rehearsals have been very successful so far: many of us now know our lines off by heart and we are now concentrating on our acting skills and expression when taking stage directions. We have also added some choreography to our musical numbers and our props team are working incredibly hard to make the essential additional items to help the play come alive! We hope you are looking forward to seeing the performances at the end of term – the children can’t wait to show you!
