This week, Reception and Nursery have been learning about ‘Remembrance Day’. We started by watching the CBeebies children’s remembrance film, a beautiful and evocative animation that sees war as experienced by animals in a World War 1 battlefield. We discussed the different feelings the rabbit displayed, such as being happy, scared, sad, lonely and peaceful. Using the music from the CBeebies animation written by Steve Price, we became the rabbit and acted out the different feelings it displayed. We created our own Flanders Field artwork by using apples to print poppies. We also took part in the two minute silence at 11 o’clock; we heard the cannons fire and thought about the brave soldiers who fought in the wars.
We read ‘The Peace Book’ by Todd Parr and explored what the word peace means. We talked about the things we like to do, to be peaceful (calm). Using the children’s ideas, we created our own class peace books. Poppies have been the theme in all areas of learning this week, including playdoh poppies and poppy transient art using loose parts.
